I cannot decolonize my body
Single-channel video · 5:27 · 2019
Commissioned by The Wrong Biennale
I cannot decolonize my body begins from the
impossibility contained in its title. Structured as a short
film and poetic incantation, the work confronts the
historical and ongoing disavowal of Indigenous and
Mesitsaje peoples across social, political, and
technological systems. Repeated turns of red interrupt
the image, operating as rupture, reorientation, and a
ritual technology of recovery.
The film established the visual and conceptual language
that continues throughout Roxanne’s practice: the body
as contested material, red as border and survival, and
repetition as a method of refusing disappearance.
